Devil’s Pie LA 3/18

So for this month’s devil’s pie, Phatrick and Roza are counting down with music and pastries that fit the party’s theme. Since I’m doing a guest set this month, I figured I’d throw one helping of music and dessert up over here (and also because my tastes are decidedly different….but best believe I’m bringing some dusty burners to DPLA! Party details at the end of this post.)

a-heeeeeere we goooo:
MUSIC

Donna McGhee – Make It last Forever

From her 1978 album of the same name, this joint is one of those slow deep disco burners that just never gets old for me. The string arrangement on this is bonkers and at 8 minutes it leaves lots of room for Donna to moan and make it, uh, last forever. The album, produced by Patrick Adams and Gregg Carmichael (it was on Carmichael’s “Red Greg” label) features “It Ain’t No Big Thing” which is a classic, but for my money, this is the cut (of course, with Adams on arrangement there are gonna be nuff bangers).

splendor grrrl.

The Micronauts – The Jag

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Now to veer from Devil’s Pie territory, in 1998 “Make It Last Forever” was sampled by the Micronauts for “The Jag,” a kinda groggy joint used in Gregg Araki’s Splendor (you know, that boring threeway movie) with an equally cliched tripped out pansexual rave-ish drug store video for the song (stay away if you’ve got heteronormative hang-ups…but come on, watch it and spill the L U L Z with the rave fashion, and it’s the guy from GO!). Highlight of “The Jag” is the voice getting pitched up and the stabs of “Make It Last Forever.” It’d be kind of impossible to not make a sexy-ish song from the sample material, but it’s one I listened to on repeat in high school (is that weird? my brother had passed it on to me along with all manner of musical madness). But enough of the rave-aside: “Make It Last Forever” is one in a long tradition of over the top beautiful disco songs with production values that should make a lot of people jealous.

p.s. when uploading the track, I realized that acronymified, “Make It Last Forever,” is MILF. LATE PASS! Also, two Greggs in one post.

Dobash (Hawai’i)/Doberge (NOLA)(?) /Dobosch Torte (Viennese) (?)
All I know for sure is that back in Hawai’i this joint is dobash and next to some guava cake, it is one of the few desserts i will fux with (i see you too malasadas! what’s good my portuguese (a-hem potagee) fam?). Anyway, the dobash i like has super rich but thin pudding-y layers of filling between super spongy cake, all chocolate. Looking at recipes, they call for at least 7 eggs, so can i get protein from this? Whatever: it’s the bomb and smooth like the strings in “Make It Last Forever” I don’t get all “OMG YUMMMM MMM UMMMM ohhh OHHHH” with pastry usually, but a good dobash is fer sure on the road to bonerville. Aside: When we moved from HI, my mom was craving the cake so she went to the nearby bakery and of course they had no clue as to what she referred, the only thing they came back with was “divorce cake???” HELL YEAH IT IS.

(note: you can get passable dobash in southern california at King’s.

Do you know

how much

I eat? It’s bordering on insanity.

From around:

-Yglesias and some “typical conservative complaining.” Fun comments. Appropriate given this story out of los angeles: Police called over Thanksgiving dispute at Claremont school. Of course an elementary school, and of course about costumes!

-Ezra Klein on the paucity of MPPs so far with the transition. I hope he’s right. A shift kind of needs to happen…considering where i wanna be in the next 4 or 5 years. Oh and a Klein bonus beat: Say hello to Mr. Sunshine

-Unrelated: Forgot to mention a fat shoutout to Endo for having me spin at Tangier on last Saturday. It was a blast. Endo, Roza, and I definitely did some damage for a super up for it group of birthday revelers.

-I had an intrvw yesterday that I felt pretty good about. Amazing team of folks got to question me. Job or no job…good to see a dope organization. Finger stay crossed till next week.

Finally:
It’s about that time

Metropolitan Metaphoring

Cruising here with a tall glass of the good drink, listening to Pase Rock live at the Do-Over (LA’s second best party after Funkmosphere in my opinion), and visualizing doing it big in New York and some upcoming projects.

-Thanks to Jeff Chang, Tamlyn Tomita was on my screen tonight and I am never opposed to that. (If you’re not following Jeff’s twitter….get on that for real. DNC coverage is money (“Mitt Romney just stepped on my adidas. DICK!” Next post: “His hair looked good tho.”). (Please to direct all “Capski is a Jeff Chang Fan Boy” correspondence to my junkmail folder, by the way. Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop helped me teach research and sourcing information. For that: eternal gratitude.)

-I’m re-reading Debating Diversity  for the like 9th time. Mostly just to get that classic righteous indignation that Samuel Huntington engenders.

-I’m also reading a 4th grade level survey of greek mythology illustrated by Rodney Matthews. Every one of his drawings in the book is better than this:

-Oh, and Hillary had her speech. Olberman and Matthews were gushing, to an almost absurd level. It’s one of those things that I really need to wait and see with. I didn’t cringe though. Just wish she addressed readiness to lead. “I support Barack Obama. A man ready to lead us into blah etc blah.” Just to kinda seal that junk that is getting thrown back from the GOP. (I was sketched to hear that Mark Penn is helping with Bill’s speech though). Main thing: It was fully on message right?

Tonight!

And here we are, the last Soul Clap I’ll experience for a longggg time. Definitely the signature party of my Hawaii experience. Respect and gratitude to the NSK dudes (Eskae, Jami, Compose, and Solution) for doing a great party and putting me on multiple times. Rest assured that when our parties get poppin, they are guesting. Word.

Think I’m spinning for a minute tonight, betta pop off. Yeeeeeeeeee. Pics tomorrow.

Nearly End Times

In a little over a week, Hawai’i will be my former home. Heading back to the land of earthquakes, 118 degree heat, and hella fake boobies.

Wasn’t spinning this weekend, so night action was limited (Holler at the man Jami though. Dude was like “YO throw on this song!” at Living Room. I ain’t played Oh Boy in a minute. And dude….that big ass hard drive sketches me out.)

So Sunday hiked the damn Waimano pool trail today on a whim after the swap meet. Cardiac hill is no joke. On the way back, I bypassed some roots and slid down a hill like a goon. Straight indiana jones’d some vines to come back up as nature boy Brad looked on, perplexed.

Yo check dudes guns though:

Hiking ain’t like thrill of the year for me, but flowers and ridges are pretty and such, plus Brad’s a good guide…and I sweated maybe enough to fill a Hummer gas tank.

Swap meet flicks after the jump:
