Freddie Gibbs and Cali Pudd -Playa (Capski Remix)

Soooooo. If you take a gander at the track list here, you might notice a little something I was involved with. (you can click through to hear the whole thing)

Can I just say how geeked I am to be part of this?

You can get the track by itself at broke mogul’s website. (you actually kinda really need the dirty version…if you listen to the mix version you’ll hear why)

It’s been a while comin! (i thought ronson playing it was the end of the story.)

New Mix: Ladies Singing

(right click on pic and save for the mp3)

Felt the need to record a mix, so here is one of various iterations of women singing over uptempo stuff. Again, lots of songs that have appeared on other things I have recorded, but wanted to go with a theme. Just hit record and see what happens. I’m kinda pleased with the way the stereolab moment happened, + the “songs with ‘love’ in the title” segment. Making love, any love, give me luv, love can break your heart, power of love, blah blah blah. Not for the tough guy crowd obviously.

Tracklist:
Janelle Monae – Lettin Go
Backroom Congregation – Sunday Morning
Kings of Tomorrow – Finally
Soulsearcher – Cant Get Enough
Stereolab – Op Hop Detonation
Basement Jaxx- Miracles Keep On Playing
Brenda Harris – Making Love
Chaka and Rufus – Any Love (Ayres Re-Edit)
Alcatraz – Give Me Luv
Saint Etienne – Only Love Can Break Your Heart (MAW remix)
Deee-Lite – Power Of Love (remix)
Bizzare Inc – I’m Gonna Get You
Emynd – Don’t Say Goodbye
Black Rock – Bluewater
David Guetta – Delirious (Laidback Luke remix) (HA!)
Miss Kittin and the Hacker – The Beach
Octave one – Blackwater
ESG – Talk It
Missy and Aaliyah – Best Friends

Mixes: Older and Newish 2006-2009

(sorry, just came back from the mountains a few days ago)

So I went a little nuts reorganizing my webspace and reuploaded a bunch of mixes I’ve recorded over the last few years. I thought I’d make a post with all of em in one place, so here goes. Some absurd moments but what the hell (best believe I won’t be uploading the 1997-2005 archives). Just a note that these are live or with minimal editing so they aren’t gonna be bonkers multitracked joints or whatever, but straight ahead (at times messy) bedroom type mixes compiling music I like. Links and quick descriptions below. Please check em out and I hope you enjoy:

February 2006 (R.I.P. Dilla)-I used to record monthly mixes for friends and this is the one I put out shortly after Dilla passed. Like everyone I wanted to just throw together a few tracks that really symbolized his sound for me. The mix starts with this little tribute and then transitions into random weirdness (like just about each of these posted). 32 minutes.

March 2006-Another monthly mix. I posted this one cause it starts with probably my favorite blend I’ve ever done (“Kryptonite” and “Green Eyed Lady”). The of course there some Kylie, Shonen Knife, Tom Vek, Plant Life, Janet Jackson, Sean Paul into Gil Scott Heron, video game music…pretty typical for 06 but I had fun with it. 32 minutes.

Hollerboard (fathertronix iteration) Monthly Mix Competition Entry-As a former hollerboard junkie, this was my entry into the monthly mix jump. Curtis Vodka and I won in May 2006 and I was pretty stoked. (May 2006 was a rad month. turned 21, graduated berkeley, moved to Hawai’i to be a teacher among other things). It’s pretty much a jumble of uptempo stuff that I would often play at parties. Jesus I did that “stick dat thang out”/”around the world” blend wayyyyy too much. 37 minutes.

Soul Clap Premix – The homie Eskae was the first person to let me do a set in Hawai’i and this is a mix I recorded before playing at his party Soul Clap. (I don’t think I missed any of them while I lived in Hawai’i…so many good times. All respect to the whole Nocturnal Sound Krew for letting me get down on the reg.) It’s a lot of Bay stuff (i moved from there like 2 months prior). Mad Mistah FAB and then a little uptempo freakout. 32 minutes.

The Whipped Mix 2006 – So there was this girl, and I recorded a mix for her. Long distance relationships make you stupid. Too bad her mix in response totally blew mine out of the water. It’s quick and mostly just some random disco-y slow burner type vibe. I mean, it does start with the Micronauts “the jag” joint into “make it last forever,” so it can’t be that bad right? (or can it, I AM single, but there are some funny inside joke jams). 20 minutes. Recorded after DJing a middle school dance.

Dancehall Mix 2007 – After I moved to Hawai’i I was asked to record a dancehall mix for my brother’s friend. Here is what happened. Kinda runs the gamut in terms of styles. 43 minutes.

Nevermind- I started this mix with a lack of vision and it kinda shows, but it has some moments I love like the Sa-Ra/General Degree blend and the Plant Life/Frank Lee White blend. Starts with hip-hop (with lots of bay stuff again) into uptempo. 42 minutes.

Goodbye, Summer 07 – Straight up ADD style mix. Lots of quick blends of the stuff I was feeling at the moment, heavy on the mismatched hip-hop with occasional surprises (Public Enemy! Lil Bow Wow! Jungle Deee-Lite remix! Bjork!) proud of this one cause it really makes a lot less sense that even my typical pointlessness. was playing around with more attmpted precise drops and excessive, mismatched airhorns. 1 hour 4 minutes.

Bored.5 – Many of the songs I was playing in live sets at the time (mid-2008ish i think?) thrown together. Disco/house-y. 27 minutes.

Thanx – Basically a continuation of the “Bored” mix, this one has two sections: midtempo stuff (I was so reobsessed with Swing Out Sister when I recorded this) and house. I enjoyed doing the Beyonce “welcome to hollywood” and “work me goddamnit” blend here toward the end and i loved doing the claude von stroke/twista and pharrell blend that starts the second half live. Super fun to record this one and you can tell..cause it’s pretty sloppy at times. 70 minutes.

House Live at a House Party-I really can’t remember when this party was or what the hell the deal was, but I recorded this. They wanted electro-y stuff and were up for lots of a bit stranger types of dance musics, so I went pretty goofy with it. The end takes the cake for cheese house with calabria/azzido da bass/call on me/everybody’s free moments, not to mention nelly furtado and lloyd “dance remixes.” Good lord. First half was corrupted and this is what I recovered. Don’t judge me…It’s fun! 42 minutes.

February 09 Uptempo and Messin Around June 09 – Both from earlier 09, I was definitely in the same kind of mood recording both (hence songs appearing more than once. Both on the disco/house/boogie vibe. The June mix is a bit more even keeled and thought out (but yo, the february joint has the final edition joint that everybody is playing again cause of duck sauce). More info on the June mix here. 30 and 59 minutes respectively.

Podcast Dec 08 Pt 1 & Podcast Dec 08 Pt 2 – I recorded these with the hope that the LU/BGC co-conspirator would also record sections and we’d put out another podcast. New Year’s shenanigans got in the way and it never happened. I havent put these up before, but I think they’re pretty fun. Part 1 is pretty straightforward house/bmore-ish fare, Part 2 gets a little wacky with hip-hop, jungle, rock, whatevvvvvvs. 27 and 25 minutes.

The most recent mixes (links to posts with more info):
Return to Junior High (jungle)
Goodwill/No Frills (all goodwill vinyl mix)
September Messing Around

(holy hell, looking through iTunes there are about 6 mixes I didn’t upload cause they even sloppier! lord have mercy!)

Goodwill/No Frills

New 33 min mix of random goodwill records laying around my room that I never got around to putting away. Synthy house/pop stuffs and some typical boogie-ish jams closing out with two weirdo songs. And yes: Serato has made me super amateur with vinyl. Enjoy.

El Do Over 7/19/09 (sappy capski recap) UPDATED

(scroll all the way down for the link to the audio download)

The Do Over, held by many to be LA’s best party (definitely top contender for me..only Funkmosphere competes), and just having gotten another LA times write-up, is one of those aspirational gigs. The party that you always go to and be like “damn I REALLY want a chance to get to play here.” The cool thing is that it’s not on some “I want to spin here cause I could do better”-tip, cause that is definitely not the case-they only book ill DJs, it’s just that the venue, crowd, and resident DJs are so dope that you just really want the shot to see what you could do.

So I feel dumb fortunate to have had the opportunity to do a set with my man Lambo today.

Gigs like this can be a little weird to think about beforehand; with so much freedom, you really have to focus your thinking. I never really prepare sets or anything, so I just huddled with Lambo a few days ago (found out that we could get put on for today on wednesday) and we agreed that we were gonna try and play really what we would want to hear: you get booked at the do over NOT to do a frat party set (cliched to “play what you want to hear” but it’s easy as a dj to cater and pander.)

Anyway, we had an early slot, 3-5, with doors opening at 2 (and the line getting unruly by 4). Early sets are awesome for a couple of reasons, for 1, less pressure, but mostly, it’s up to you to shape what’s gonna happen. All the sets were recorded and hopefully I’ll get to post it soon, but suffice to say, I’m still excited about what we played. In no way the most obscure or technical set or whatever, just something I’m proud of as a mood setter/party escalator.

What really got me was the responses after: people were so generous with praise and just so hyped on certain songs that I honestly didn’t think would get such a reaction. Guy from Chicago scolded me for playing the Danny Krivit version of “Strings of Life” but still gave props.

Was blown away by the girl from England who pulled me over and said I made her birthday with Starvue’s “Body Fusion” cause it was a big party jam when she was younger.

And of course the dude who was super amped on Bar-a-thym.

Again, not exactly obscure tracks, but songs that you might not always connect with folks in LA or in that setting on.

So while I had to leave the party early on account of my 6:46 AM bus into downtown LA and my other life, I’m still riding high, experiencing the opposite of sunday scaries…and just happy that this set, which will probably be my last for a while, is the one freshest in my memory.

No doubt i’ll be back with pics and hopefully the audio. Thanks to Jamie Strong and Haycock for the chance to do the set and to Lambo for being an awesome maniac.

Next sunday? Headed to Boston for a week long conference for work. Not quite as exciting.

Anyway, moral: Go to the do over whenever you can. Amazing music, but mostly just go for the folks!

Follow the party on twitter for reminders too. (and yeah, of course, follow your boy).

EDIT 1: And here is the audio! Download: zshare. A note about the set: Levels get a little wonky and it seems quiet and a lady whacked the turntable midway through “rock steady” and there are a lot of iffy mixes. Hell, the whole thing might not make a lot of sense away from the blazing sunshine and sangria. There is really no doubt that this a live mix (some yikes moments) But if anything, try just letting it play out cause it’ll make much LESS sense if you skip around. In any case, the vibe kinda goes from reggae (after transitioning out of Jamie Strong’s song), to some soul, to some hip-hop, to a lil r and b moment up through some boogie and disco into housier territories. We were just moving with the crowd and the weather and by the end, the party was moving pretty damn proper! Make sure you check out the other dope mixes from Inka one and DJ Jedi who also djed that day over at the do over blog.
