This chick flick, naturally, features a wild stroke of fate, when the two-year governor of an oversized igloo becomes commander in chief after the president-elect chokes on a pretzel on day one.
The movie ends with the former beauty queen shaking out her pinned-up hair, taking off her glasses, slipping on ruby red peep-toe platform heels that reveal a pink French-style pedicure, and facing down Vladimir Putin in an island in the Bering Strait. Putting away her breast pump, she points her rifle and informs him frostily that she has some expertise in Russia because it’s close to Alaska. “Back off, Commie dude,” she says. “I’m a much better shot than Cheney.”
Then she takes off in her seaplane and lands on the White House lawn, near the new ice fishing hole and hockey rink. The “First Dude,” as she calls the hunky Eskimo in the East Wing, waits on his snowmobile with the kids — Track (named after high school track meets), Bristol (after Bristol Bay where they did commercial fishing), Willow (after a community in Alaska), Piper (just a cool name) and Trig (Norse for “strength.”)
“The P.T.A. is great preparation for dealing with the K.G.B.,” President Palin murmurs to Todd, as they kiss in the final scene while she changes Trig’s diaper. “Now that Georgia’s safe, how ’bout I cook you up some caribou hot dogs and moose stew for dinner, babe?”
1. This country needs an experienced president, who has proven himself. Senator McCain has. Obama has not.
2 The Dem Party needs to fully understand that we will not tolerate having the nominee selected. They cannot steal the nomination from the candidate who won the majority of the popular vote. They cannot condon sexism, as they did. They cannot tell us to “fall in line” when they screwed over us. They need a huge lesson, and to be held accountable. Beating Obama by voting for McCain will help accomplish that.
I do not agree with McCain. But I feel that he loves this country and has the ability to ensure our security. Obama will place this country at risk. I have accepted that it is necessary to bite the bullet for the short term, give the Reps the White House for four more years, in order to make the necessary long term gains. McCain is much more tolerable to me than a lot of other Reps would be.
My vote is a protest vote. It is also a vote to save this country from a corrupt egomaniacal, poser who served in the senate for a couple of days and said - screw this. I’ll just be president. I’m half AA, that’s the only qualification necessary. The rest of the progressives jumped on his bandwagon because he is AA - for no other reason.
In my experience, skin color, alone, does not qualify one for any position - certainly not president.
Posted by, quite unsurprisingly, someone with the handle “Southern Knight,” here. Sheesh.
-Wow. 38 Million folks watched. I kept texting Roza randomly last night with cryptic messages about stoked I was. I think I was annoying. Catch me not caring.
-As for the Biz, Jeff Chang’s write-ups remain crucial. Pointing out that 50 of Minnesota’s 80 delegates were of color is super major and yet another reason to feel pride.
Of course, the debate on race is still woefully infantile up in here (At least us mixed/indeterminate race folks can point to someone else when someone look at us all confused) and that’s why I really appreciate the Can’t Stop Won’t Stop commentary as I’ve allowed myself to take in a bit too much policy/realpolitiky wonkery and step aside from my typical theoretical paradigm. Also sup to Poplicks on that tip of course.
-Thanks to JeffChang, Tamlyn Tomita was on my screen tonight and I am never opposed to that. (If you’re not following Jeff’s twitter….get on that for real. DNC coverage is money (”Mitt Romney just stepped on my adidas. DICK!” Next post: “His hair looked good tho.”). (Please to direct all “Capski is a Jeff Chang Fan Boy” correspondence to my ass, by the way. Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop helped me teach research and sourcing information. For that: eternal gratitude.)
-I’m re-reading Debating Diversityfor the like 9th time. Mostly just to get that classic righteous indignation that Samuel Huntington engenders.
-I’m also reading a 4th grade level survey of greek mythology illustrated by Rodney Matthews. Every one of his drawings in the book is better than this:
-Oh, and Hillary had her speech. Olberman and Matthews were gushing, to an almost absurd level. It’s one of those things that I really need to wait and see with. I didn’t cringe though. Just wish she addressed readiness to lead. “I support Barack Obama. A man ready to lead us into blah etc blah.” Just to kinda seal that junk that is getting thrown back from the GOP. (I was sketched to hear that Mark Penn is helping with Bill’s speech though). Main thing: It was fully on message right?
